The news. According to a recent study over at Consumer Intelligence Research Partners (CIRP), this year exhibited a greater influx of Android users moving over to Apple’s OS and the iPhone was much greater when compared to last year’s iPhone launch. According to Mike Levin, CIRP partner and co-founder “Ideally, Apple attracts a significant percent of its customers from Android and other systems,”.
Furthermore, according to the research, during this year’s most recent iPhone launch the company saw a pretty hefty increase in users coming from a previous iPhone, most likely as a result of there being very few consumers left in the U.S. without a smartphone. According to the graph above by CIRP, in Sept of 2012 there was a 16% jump from individuals moving from an Android smartphone to the Apple operating system. The study goes on to further state that this year the number jumped to 21% with the launch of the iPhone 5s and 5c devices.
Now, here’s where the more questions part comes in. Of last year’s 16% and this year’s 21% what kind of Android devices and what version OS of Android where they using? If you think this doesn’t make a difference then ask yourself why you yourself jumped to a new smartphone? Was it not because of the new hardware and software? Of course it was. So how many of those previous Android users who jumped ship had a four year old Android device with Eclair or Froyo still on it? In my opinion, and I’m not just saying this because I write for an Android blog, there really isn’t anything enticing enough to lure one to make the jump to an iPhone from todays highly mature Android operating system. And I’m speaking in regards to both hardware and software. It’s as simple as this, there’s just more to choose from with Android. And while I’m not sure how the survey was conducted, I can bet you most of those users probably had a MyTouch device with Donut on it and a 3.5-inch display when they made that jump. It’s really difficult to assume that someone would jump from a device 4 to 6-inches in screen size, house anywhere from a dual-core to quad-core CPU and HD display back to a device that just received a 4-inch display and dual-core CPU.
